SASKATCHEWAN POSTS TOP EXPORT NUMBERS

Saskatchewan's merchandise exports had the highest increase in the nation in January 2012, an increase of 31 per cent over last January, to a total of $2.74 billion.

"Rising export numbers are creating more jobs, more opportunities and are helping to attract the investment required to make sure our economy continues to move forward," Enterprise Minister Jeremy Harrison said. "Businesses are seeing the advantage of working in Saskatchewan, and we are confident that with hard work 2012 will be another successful year for the provincial economy."

Agricultural products were up 21.5 per cent over this period to $682.1 million, while energy products totalled $1.3 billion, up 93.5 per cent. Machinery and equipment was up by 44.0 per cent and consumer goods were also up by 13.3 per cent.

"With an economy that is reliant on a strong export component, today's report is definitely good news for Saskatchewan workers and businesses," Harrison said.
