DOMESTIC VIOLENCE: WOMEN’S SHELTERS OR THE GUN REGISTRY?
“Statistics Canada reports 220 women and children turned away in one day!”

Ottawa – Today, Saskatchewan M.P. Garry Breitkreuz revealed a little Liberal secret. Well, not so little as it turns out. “While the Liberals were wasting over a billion dollars on the gun registry over the last ten years, hundreds of women and children were being turned away from women’s shelters every day,” revealed Breitkreuz. “While doing research on domestic violence, we keep finding news stories about women’s shelters not being able to accommodate abused women showing up at their doorsteps.”

Then the Library of Parliament sent Breitkreuz the most recent Statistics Canada reports on shelters for abused women showing the tragic truth ignored by the Liberals for years:

(1) On snapshot day, one-fifth of all shelters referred 221 women and 112 children elsewhere. About two-thirds of these shelters reported referring women and children elsewhere because the shelter was full (See report #1 below),
(2) Eight in 10 abused women in shelters were there to escape a current or former spouse/common law partner (See report #2 below).

Another analysis of domestic violence just completed by the Library’s Parliamentary Research Branch showed spousal homicides committed each year have remained virtually unchanged over the last ten years (See report #3 below). “This despite all the money poured into the gun registry by the Liberals,” exclaimed Breitkreuz. “The futility of it all is driven home by the fact that seventy percent of the women murdered by a family member over the last ten years were murdered with something other than a firearm.”

“These three reports expose ten years of Liberal deception on the firearms file. Women should be outraged that they were treated so shoddily when one of the solutions to combat family violence was obvious and blatantly ignored for so many years,” concluded Breitkreuz.
