YORKTON-MELVILLE
COMMUNITIES ELIGIBLE FOR OVER OTTAWA – Villages, towns, cities and rural municipalities in the constituency of Yorkton-Melville are eligible to receive in excess of $6 million over the next two years in Gas Tax Fund (GTF) transfers, announced Garry Breitkreuz, M.P. for Yorkton-Melville. “Today, I am pleased to announce that more than $2 million in accelerated 2008-09 gas tax transfers are available to municipalities in Yorkton-Melville, and that that amount will double for next year,” said Breitkreuz. “Our government remains committed to supporting municipal infrastructure today, and years from now.” The Gas Tax Fund is part of an ongoing commitment from the Government of Canada to create jobs and stimulate the economy through modern public infrastructure. It is also an example of all levels of government working together to improve infrastructure and the quality of life of Canadians. The first GTF payment will be made in April. In the past, payments have been made in July and then November. The GTF makes capital investments in water, wastewater and solid waste infrastructure, public transit, community energy systems, and local roads and bridges. The Fund combines predictable, long-term funding with local decision making and planning to enable municipalities to build and rehabilitate their core public infrastructure. Gas Tax funding is provided nationwide and the money is allocated based on population. “Across Canada $1 billion in Gas Tax Fund transfers will be available for 2008-09, and that amount will double to $2 billion for 2009-10,” said Breitkreuz. “For residents of Saskatchewan, that amounts to $29.5 million in 2008-09 and $59.1 million in 2009-10 and each year beyond that until 2014.” The GTF supports environmentally sustainable municipal infrastructure projects that contribute to cleaner air, cleaner water and reduced greenhouse gas emissions. The Fund provides predictable and long-term infrastructure money to Canada's cities and towns. Eligible investment categories include: public transit, drinking water, wastewater infrastructure, green energy, solid waste management, local roads and bridges. Municipalities can pool, bank and borrow against this funding, providing significant additional financial flexibility. To ensure accountability to Canadians, communities report on their use of the funds' activities on an annual basis. -30- *
