OFFICIAL OPPOSITION SILENT ON POSITIVE REPORT FROM AUDITOR GENERAL OTTAWA - Garry Breitkreuz, M.P. for Yorkton-Melville was very pleased with the Fall 2010 Report of the Auditor General of Canada, tabled in the House of Commons on October 26, 2010. When her report was released, the Auditor General said, “I would like to give the government high marks for how they managed this program…I think officials deserve congratulations for rolling out such a major program quickly, without resorting to throwing any regulations or safeguards out.” “The Office of the Auditor General reviews federal government departments and programs and provides Parliament with independent information, free from political interference, regarding the federal government’s management of our tax dollars,” explained Breitkreuz. “With the downturn of Canada’s economy, our government acted quickly to reduce the damage. The Economic Action Plan was quickly developed and put in place to stimulate spending by Canadians, stimulate housing construction, support businesses and communities and build infrastructure like roads, highways, sewer and water systems. “What is interesting about the release of the Auditor General’s report is that there has not been one question from the Official Opposition on the review of Canada’s Economic Action Plan in Parliament,” commented Breitkreuz. The Economic Action Plan has funded almost 23,000 projects over the past two years and created enough jobs to mitigate the effects of the recession. As delivery time of these programs was critical, the total time to design, review and approve programs was reduced from six to two months. Said Breitkreuz, “The Economic Action Plan was a huge undertaking and the Official Opposition has remained curiously silent on the Auditor General’s report. When a program is run properly and provides the benefits Canadians demand, even the Official Opposition realizes that the Conservative government is on the right track.” “The news this week is about what didn’t make the news. Thousands of infrastructure projects were put in place across Canada and the Official Opposition couldn’t find anything to criticize. Compare this with the previous scandal plagued Liberal government and the choice for Canadians is clear,” Breitkreuz concluded. -30- For more information: Glenda Eimantas
