BREITKREUZ BACKS STOCKWELL DAY TO BE CANADA’S NEXT PRIME MINISTER

"Stockwell is our best chance of holding the West and breaking through in Eastern Canada."

Ottawa – Last week, Garry Breitkreuz, Member of Parliament for Yorkton-Melville and Official Opposition Critic on Firearms Issues, officially pledged his support for Canadian Alliance leadership candidate Stockwell Day. "Today, I’m outlining my reasons why," said Breitkreuz. "What’s the point of this whole two year process if we stay with the same leader? Canadians have to decide who will help us garner support east of Manitoba. I’ve made my choice."

Breitkreuz admits he has a great deal of respect for Preston Manning’s accomplishments but feels Day is the leader to take the western political movement for reform to the next step. "You can't take anything away from Preston given all the things he has done. In my heart, I still feel that Stock will appeal to more people across Canada than Preston. Stock grew up in the east and lives in the west. He’s a grassroots type of guy and in politics connecting with ordinary people is just as important as having the right policies," said Breitkreuz. "The fact that he’s able to communicate in French will also help us break new ground in Quebec and New Brunswick.''

"Many supporters of my work have asked where Stockwell stands on the gun control issue," said Breitkreuz. "I refer them to Stock’s web site (www.stockwellday.com) for the answer. Policy Statement #31 states: We believe there should be severe mandatory penalties for the criminal use of any weapon. "We are committed to keeping guns out of the hands of violent criminals as a necessary part of making our communities safer. We will replace the current firearms law with a practical firearms control system that is cost effective and respects the rights of Canadians to own and use firearms responsibly."

Breitkreuz added, "Stockwell has also established a track record of defending gun owners rights. As a Minister in the Alberta Government, he played an important role in the decision taken by Alberta to challenge the constitutionality of the federal Firearms Act." Alberta was one of six provinces and two territories opposing C-68 when the Supreme Court heard the case in February. "In the last week, Mr. Day has continued to voice his opposition to the ‘lunacy’ of the gun registration scheme."

"Under Stock’s leadership I believe we can rest assured that all provinces, sectors of the economy, businesses and individuals will be treated equally. We need a leader who has been in government and understands the free market policies necessary to promote development and diversification," said Breitkreuz. "With the right policies, we can all look forward to Saskatchewan shedding its label as a ‘have-not province’. I want to see the day when agriculture never has to take a back seat to other industries and issues on the national agenda. Electing Stockwell Day is the first step in that direction. He has an impressive record in government of lowering taxes and paying off government debt – a skill that’s desperately needed in Ottawa."

"Finally, I support Stockwell Day for leader because of his respect for families, his understanding of family issues and the need to defend and support families as the best way of enhancing the lives of our children and sustaining the social fabric of Canadian society. Add to this his respect for grassroots democracy, and I think we’ve got ourselves a winner," concluded Breitkreuz.
