The Annual Agriculture Forum, hosted by Garry Breitkreuz, MP for Yorkton-Melville - March 23, 2006

YORKTON – Over 800 producers from throughout Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Alberta packed St. Mary’s Cultural Centre in Yorkton Thursday, for the Annual Agriculture Forum, hosted by Garry Breitkreuz, MP for Yorkton-Melville.

The all-day forum featured a number of presenters speaking on varying issues including ethanol, bio-diesel and carbon credits. The feature speaker during the morning portion of the Forum was Chuck Strahl, Canada’s new Minister of Agriculture.

Wesley Black, representing producers from the RM of Porcupine, was among a number of audience members to address Strahl.
Minister Strahl also announced $3.2 million in funding from Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada to explore new North American markets for pulse crops such as lentils, beans, peas and chickpeas. Following the announcement, Strahl fielded a number of questions from the media.


Among the other presenters at this year' Ag Forum were (above) Alanna Koch of CAFTA, and Tyler Bjornson of the Canola Council; and (below) Harley Furtan of the University of Saskatchewan and Lionel Labelle of the Sask Ethanol Development Council Inc.


Linda Reiter of Sask Soil Conservation also addressed the audience on the issue of carbon credits.
