FIREARMS FACTS UPDATE COSTS
OF FIREARMS PROGRAM MAY 30, 2006 - LIBRARY OF PARLIAMENT Below, you will find links to the two best sources of information provide the annual cost to the federal government for the firearms program prior to the passage and coming into force of Bill C-68. The first is a graph,
from the 2004-2005 Departmental Performance Report of the Canada Firearms
Centre, showing the annual costs of the firearms program from 1995-96
to 2004-2005. It indicates that the annual costs were $12.8 million
for 1995-96, which is the fiscal year during which Bill C-68
received royal assent (in December). Please see Table 3.2 (Multi-Year
Perspective on Program Costs) on p. 26: The second source
of information is the response to a question posed by Mr. Breitkreuz during
debate on Bill C-68. The government advised that the total federal cost
of administering the firearms program in 1993-94 was $15.5 million.
