HALIFAX
-- Nova Scotia Premier John Hamm says simply “tinkering'' with the federal gun
registry is not the answer.
He
says it should be scrapped altogether.
Prime
Minister Paul Martin confirmed yesterday that his government is reviewing the
controversial registry, with an eye to making changes.
He
would not get into details, but published reports say reallocating some of the
registry's resources is a possibility.
The
money could be used to beef up other areas, such as policing or security at
borders where illegal guns make their way into Canada from the United States.
The
review is not expected to recommend killing the registry.
Most
provinces, including Nova Scotia, Alberta and British Columbia, have refused to
comply with the legislation.
Hamm
did sound a conciliatory note, saying he'd look at the changes and consider
whether Nova Scotia would continue with its refusal to prosecute gun registry
charges.
