FIREARMS FACTS UPDATE
OF
THE FIREARMS ACT
November
9, 2004: The application of the firearms registration requirements to Nunavut
Inuit have been temporarily suspended by the courts since December 10, 2002.
The
Parliamentary Research Branch of the Library of Parliament confirmed today that
according to the Nunavut Tunngavik Incorporated (NTI) there have been no further
developments in their challenge to the firearms legislation since a judge
rejected a request by the Federal Government to have Nunavut Tunngavik's main
lawsuit dismissed in July 2003 (see link below).
The
Library researcher advised that such a lengthy delay in responding to the
injunction by the Federal Government is "unusual but probably not
unprecedented", and further, that without prejudice
discussions/negotiations between NTI and Canada Firearms Centre have taken
place, but not at accelerated pace.
