CRITIC SLAMS FEDS' GUN CONTROL CLAIM

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Federal gun-control officials claim compliance with firearms licensing and registration laws has reached almost 90%. The figure is in a Canada Firearms Centre report released yesterday, stating nearly seven- million guns have been registered since it became mandatory Jan. 1, 2003.

But Saskatchewan Conservative MP Gary Breitkreuz said the document greatly exaggerates the success by excluding millions of unregistered firearms. "We've determined there are at least 16.5-million firearms out there so we've got not even half registered," said Breitkreuz.

Wendy Cukier of the Coalition for Gun Control said Breitkreuz's numbers are hogwash, going against both internal and foreign data on firearms ownership in Canada .
