Instead of crushing crime and those who commit it, Ottawa insists on focusing its wrath on the compliant.
The Liberal government’s Firearms Confiscation Compensation Program is a monument to this stupidity.
Broken trust with government and its citizens is the result.
While smugglers flood our cities with illegal U.S. guns, this Liberal government wages war against farmers, hunters, and sport shooters who’ve obeyed every law on the books.
The government claims it’s a “public safety measure.”
But when every step of their plan refuses to acknowledge truth, it’s nothing more than a control agenda cloaked in virtue signals and lies.
A Pilot Program or a Public Show Trial?
The pilot program rollout in Cape Breton began September 23, drips with noble language that’s riddled with irony.
Canadians can now log in, declare their own property “illegal,” and await the police visit that will take it away.
Compensation?
A few hundred dollars for what might’ve cost thousands.
Custom work, personal history, and craftsmanship?
All ignored.
Critics call it a “gun grab.” They’re right.
Because when a free man must beg to keep what the law once blessed, trust is destroyed.
A rally on October 10th made that message plain: rural Canadians will not bow to a city’s fear.
The minister claims it’s all about “safety and security.”
But security bought with forced compliance isn’t safety, it’s surrender.
Some experts predict costs could soar past $6 billion. But the real cost isn’t in the dollars wasted, it’s the trust broken between a government and its most law-abiding citizens.
Provinces Refuse to Kneel Before Ottawa’s Edict
Alberta and Saskatchewan drew their line in early October.
They said, “No.”
They said, “We will not enforce this injustice.”
Alberta’s Justice Minister called the federal scheme what it is: punishment for the law-abiding, mercy for the criminal.[i]
“Albertans and Canadians have been rightfully concerned that attacking law-abiding firearms owners does not address the spike in illegal gun crime under the federal Liberal government,” said a joint statement from Mickey Amery, Minister of Justice, and Mike Ellis, Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Services.[ii]
“This confiscation scheme is not about public safety. The federal Minister of Public Safety said himself that he doesn’t think that the police can properly enforce the program and acknowledged that the Ontario Provincial Police will not enforce the program in that province. Further, the minister has made it very clear that they are only keeping this program to satisfy Liberal voters in Quebec.”
Saskatchewan stood shoulder-to-shoulder with Alberta.
Even within the RCMP, quiet voices admit what officials won’t say out loud: the Liberal government’s Firearms Confiscation Compensation Scheme squanders scarce police resources and is utterly useless against violent crime.
If the recent hit at a Laval Starbucks taught us anything, it’s that criminals couldn’t care less about another gun law or another “crackdown” on licensed gun owners.[iii]
For those committed to criminal violence, it’s business as usual and both the government and police seem powerless to stop it.
Over two thousand makes and models of firearms banned since 2020. More added in 2024 and 2025.
Criminal violence escalates, year after year.
Brazen, daylight murder is almost commonplace.
And yet, the men and women who follow the law are treated like enemies of the state.
When government treats obedience to the law as rebellion against it and ignores those who turn our streets and coffee shops into shooting galleries, people lose faith.
They lose faith that the government has their best interests at heart.
They lose faith that the police can stop the violence.
They lose faith in those who claim to protect them and realize that they’ve believed the government’s lies for far too long.
The only people who can keep them safe is themselves.
The Real Threat Still Walks Free
While the federal government strangles lawful gun owners, border agents keep pulling America-sourced weapons from smugglers’ hands.
On September 29, in Windsor, CBSA seized forty-eight guns, thirty auto-sears, and seventeen thousand rounds.[iv] One man—charged October 1—stands accused.
But the CBSA openly admits that “90% of all firearms seized at our border coming into Canada came from the United States.” [v]
So why is Ottawa so obsessed with Canadians who did everything right, who followed every law and obeyed every regulation?
Because taking guns from licensed gun owners is orders of magnitude easier (and safer) than getting illegal guns out of the hands of violent criminals.
And headlines are easier than results.
The Hard Truth
Canada’s firearm fiasco isn’t about guns. It’s about government forgetting who it serves.
When you punish obedience, you erode the very soil where law and liberty grow.
Freedom cannot survive on political pandering and bureaucratic whims.
Justice demands truth.
Truth demands courage.
Mark Carney’s Liberal government, like Justin Trudeau’s before it, lacks both.

The notion that “police can stop violence” is a fallacy. Canadians need to understand this. One only has to look at violent attacks on Canadian police officers themselves to understand that our standard-issue police officers are under-trained and under-equipped to effectively deal with violence perpetrated by bonafide criminals. Additionally, the adage “there is never a cop around when you need one” is not just a tongue-in-cheek saying; it 100% holds true as far as the misguided expectation by Canadians that “police will come and save me from violence” is concerned. It is physically impossible for police to be at the right place, at the right time, with the right equipment, information and mindset, to save any Canadian from violence. Even if your house is next to a “cop shop”, or you have a unit parked in your driveway, police will not be able to save you from violence when the criminal has decided that your number is up. Criminals generally are not the brightest demographic, but they understand that a soft target is better than a hard target. The best bet for saving yourself from violence is YOU. And the ultimate tool for you defending yourself against violence, whether that is a home invasion, an unprovoked subway attack, IPV, or, yes, a school/restaurant/place-of-worship shooting, is a firearm (*some are more appropriate than others for self-defense, and successive governments have done a bang-up job of taking away most of the optimum ones from licensed firearms owners, ).
Canadians need to understand that the basic principle behind Canada’s firearms training and licensing regime is top-tier, world-class: By virtue of the fact that a licensed gun owner is back-ground checked every single day, Canadians ought to rest assured that it is not licensed gun owners who are committing violent crimes. Statistics Canada would agree, making Canadian licensed firearms owners the least likely demographic to commit ANY crimes, let alone violent ones, by a factor of three.
While the training and application process to become a licensed firearms owner in Canada is top-notch, with the possible exception of a mandatory live-fire training element needing to be included in the initial training portion, it is the execution of the process by the judicial and enforcement side that is lagging and, quite frankly, failing Canadians at large. One only needs to look at backgrounds of prior police interactions that have taken place with some of Canada’s more infamous violent criminals to understand that more could have and should have been done at that level to stop violent criminals, who were in illegal possession of firearms to start with, or, who should no longer have been in possession of legal firearms after the FIRST instance of criminal interaction with law enforcement. That is where Canada’s firearms control regime is failing, and that is where the money needs to go: rigorous enforcement of the basics: If you have done bad, you can no longer legally own a firearm, ever. Pouring any effort into confiscation of firearms from Canadians whose background is so squeaky clean you can safely eat off it is a waste of time and resources, and continues to place Canadians at the mercy of violent criminals for death or grave bodily harm.
This comes full circle back to the presence of firearms (smuggled into the country or stolen from licensed owners) in the hands of people who are not even supposed to have any firearms (as a result of not, or no longer, having a license). They have the tools, illegitimately so, to deliver death or grave bodily harm onto unsuspecting law-abiding Canadians. Sure, more can always be done to screen for illegal firearms coming across the border, but it will never EVER capture all illegal firearms destined for the hands of criminals. This, while keeping in mind that violence with firearms is but a small portion of all the violence that is perpetrated onto the Canadian population by criminals, where bare hands and bladed weapons make up a far greater portion of the tools used to inflict death or grave bodily harm. Taking the optimum tool of self-defense away from law-abiding Canadians, and given that police are not going to save you from violence, leaves but a single realistic path forward. Spoiler Alert: It is not the disarmament of good Canadians – That is just an electioneering tactic and has nothing to do with actually doing something about violence in Canada. Ownership of firearms by trained and licensed Canadians also has nothing to do with the “Wild West”, as recently spouted by someone high up in government; this is simply about your right to defend yourself from death or grave bodily harm – remember, THAT is YOUR God-given Right, not just a slogan. THAT Right is no good if you cannot wield it for lack of the best tool. And you definitely require the best possible tool to defend yourself from violence, since the perpetrator will decide the time and the place, and the event will never be a fair fight for your life from the very start.
