Ottawa – Saskatchewan M.P. Garry Breitkreuz was disappointed after the defeat of Bill C-222 Wednesday night in the House of Commons but expressed hope for the future of similar legislative initiatives, including his own. MP Inky Mark’s Private Members Bill, An Act to recognize and protect Canada’s hunting, trapping and fishing heritage, went down to defeat by a vote of 201 to 58 (see complete voting results below). “During the two hours of debate of this bill, we learned that there was wide support for the intent and spirit of Inky’s bill. Yesterday, I introduced a Private Member’s Motion that I believe embraces this consensus.
“We should promote our hunting, fishing and trapping heritage activities, because the men and women who use the outdoors are most interested in preserving the environment. Their efforts are essential to wildlife management and habitat conservation and rehabilitation,” said Breitkreuz. “Acknowledging and using the considerable resources of the federal government to promote our traditional heritage activities would go a long way to protecting them. We all have to thank Inky Mark for his efforts to bring this important issue to the floor of the House of Common. Next time we will be better prepared and next time we will succeed,” concluded Breitkreuz. -30- Bill C-222,
