Dear Tony;
We were shocked but not surprised to wake to the news of what is happening in Canada to your firearms laws.
While looking like a mirror image of what is happening here, Canada’s banned firearms list is much more extensive than our initial lists.
The mirroring lies in the way the process is being run by our respective Governments.
Tony, the Council of Licenced Firearms Owners of New Zealand support your stand and are available to you if you need any assistance or information.
Back here we are still awaiting the second tranche of legislation to be debated in the house in its third and final reading. This Bill as currently written will almost certainly see the demise of clubs and ranges around New Zealand if indeed the Bill goes through in its current format.
Like you, we are communicating with media and politicians and have a Judicial Review hearing in the High Court beginning tomorrow. The hearing is on an Order in Council whereby Government banned some ammunition without compensation.
We are arguing the precedent that such an order creates when one has private property seized by the state with any recourse. We have elections coming up in September and expect our workload to continue at its high rate between now and then.
If there is any information or assistance we can help with, please do not hesitate to get in touch. I have copied our COLFO Chairman Michael Dowling into this email.
The Council wish the Canadian Shooting Sports Association all the best in what will be trying times for you all ahead.
Yours sincerely,
Council of Licenced Firearms Owners Inc
