Liberals Waste Millions to Confiscate Firearms from Legal Firearm Owners, but Still No Action on Gun Smuggling or Gang Violence

In October 2021, the Canadian Taxpayers Federation released documents showing the Liberal Government’s Firearm Confiscation Compensation Scheme was 34% over budget before they confiscated a single firearm from licensed owners.[i]

Public Safety Canada’s Quarterly Financial Report for the quarter ended June 30, 2021, admits to an “increase of $8.8 million to develop a buy-back program for assault-style firearms (sic) and its associated national social marketing campaign.”[ii]

And they still haven’t confiscated a single firearm from law-abiding gun owners.

As costs for the Liberals’ latest Firearms Boondoggle continue to rise, so does violent crime committed with illegal guns – the very guns this Liberal government completely ignores.

So far in November 2021, 47 violent repeat offenders were arrested and charged with 82 counts of violating an existing Firearm Prohibition Order and other crimes.[iii]

In the past week alone, news reports say six people were murdered, violent criminals attempted to murder another six and a Quebec man was arrested and charged with firearms trafficking.[iv]

Is there a common denominator being ignored by this Liberal government and its latest Public Safety Minister?

Every one of these offences were committed by criminals using illegally-possessed guns – and are being totally ignored by Marco Mendicino, Canada’s newest Minister of Public Safety.

Mendicino regurgitated three years of useless Liberal talking points spewed forth by his predecessor, Bill Blair.

“We’ve already put into place some additional restrictions and prohibitions on assault-style guns (sic). We banned 1,500 of them and we’re prepared to do more. We need to do more,” said Minister Mendicino.[v]

Mendicino is committed to the Liberal Party’s attack on law-abiding firearms owners and confiscate their legally-owned guns.

Mendicino will also ignore violent criminals and the crimes they commit with smuggled guns.

Utterly moronic.

The National Police Federation (NFP), which represents 20,000 RCMP members, sensibly called for the federal government to “properly address crime prevention rather than the ongoing monitoring of unrelated restrictions on licensed and regulated firearms owners.”

The NFP also called for “legislation that effectively addresses crime reduction, gang diversion, safe communities, secure borders, Canadian enforcement agency integration, and cross-border safety of the public and all police officers.

Instead of addressing those deficiencies, Marco Mendicino peddled more inaction on violent crime.

“My door is open,” Mendicino claims. “If the government of Quebec wants to work with the federal government to take additional strong action against getting guns out of our communities, we’ll be there.”

But neither Quebec nor any other province wants to ban legally-owned firearms from law-abiding Canadians.

Every province, including Quebec, wants the flow of illegal guns across our border and into the hands of violent criminals, drug dealers and gangs, stopped.

“The narrative is that we need to restrict gun ownership because that will curtail crime, when really the evidence is that illegal gun trafficking leads to criminals owning guns, which leads to crimes with firearms,” said Brian Sauvé, President of the National Police Federation.[vi]

“The statistics are clear, 80 per cent of guns being used in crime are obtained using illegal means — including from across the border — and half of the gun-related deaths in Ontario were gang-related,” said Stephen Warner of the Ontario Solicitor General’s Office.

But Trudeau’s Liberal government has little interest in taking the action required to address the real problem.

We’ve seen this Liberal nonsense before.

Marco Mendicino and this Liberal government wastes billions of dollars harassing law-abiding firearm owners but utterly ignores the people who pose the greatest threat to public safety – violent criminals, drug dealers and gangs.

Ignoring criminals and the violence they cause may some bizarre Liberal Party value – but it’s certainly not a Canadian value.
