Liberals: Long on Gun Confiscation Promises, Short on Follow-Through

Justin Trudeau and his Liberal government are obsessed with confiscating guns owned by licensed firearms owners.

On the day Justin Trudeau and Bill Blair banned 1,500 makes and models of rifles and shotguns, they promised that Firearms Confiscation Compensation would be paid to owners of these now-worthless guns.

Since then, the consistent theme from Justin Trudeau and his parade of Public Safety Ministers has not changed.

“We have signaled our intent to implement a buyback program as soon as possible.”[i]

“As soon as possible” appears to mean never, primarily because Trudeau and his parade of Public Safety Ministers can’t find anyone willing to confiscate firearms on the government’s behalf.

Their constant delays have not prevented this government from talking about confiscating guns given the slightest opportunity.

A search of the Government of Canada’s website shows 140 results for the term “gun buyback.”[ii]

Those prattling on about their grandiose Firearms Confiscation Compensation Scheme includes the Prime Minister’s office, the Department of Justice, Public Safety Canada, Canada Border Services Agency, two Throne Speeches and the Minister for Women and Gender Equality.

It seems everyone wants to talk about the Liberal plan to confiscate guns from licensed firearms owners yet, despite wasting over $67 million so far, they haven’t managed to confiscate a single firearm. [iii]

But they will begin confiscating those guns soon, promised Public Safety Minister Dominic LeBlanc on September 24, 2024.

“We’ll have more information, those concrete details that I know you’re looking forward to, in the coming weeks…” Leblanc told reporters.[iv]

That’s been LeBlanc’s refrain since it took over from Marco Mendicino in late 2023.

“More information on the buyback program will be available at a later date.”[v]

They’ve wasted four long years and so much money that one of their staunchest supporters, gun ban lobby group PolySeSouvient declared Justin Trudeau “persona non grata” at their annual remembrance of 14 women murdered on December 6, 1989.

Violent Crime Rates Soar under Trudeau

Imagine if this Liberal government focused their obsession on the real problem and confiscated guns from violent criminals and repeat offenders.

If they did the hard work required to actually “keep Canadians safe” we wouldn’t see headlines like  “Violent Crime Surges in Canada’s Major Cities: Report.[vi]

The Urban Violent Crime Report[vii], published by the Macdonald-Laurier Institute, analysed “10 years of police-reported violent crime data (2014–2023) on homicide, aggravated assault, sexual assault, and robbery in order to explore violent crime trends in nine major cities that comprise one-third of the Canadian population: Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Winnipeg, Peel Region, Toronto, York Region, Ottawa, and Montreal.”

“Violent crime rates for certain crimes – most notably sexual assault and robbery – are rising nearly everywhere. In particular, sexual assault rates are consistently trending upward over the long- and short-term, with increases in every major city except Ottawa.”

Higher violent crime and more sexual assaults are the true legacy of Canada’s self-proclaimed feminist Prime Minister.

Why are women’s groups not up in arms over this?

We’re Grateful for Liberal Ineptness

After four long years, the Liberals’ tune remains the same.

“We’ll have more information, those concrete details that I know you’re looking forward to, in the coming weeks…”

They keep promising to keep their promises… but Canadians aren’t interested.

“The harbinger of the Liberal’s metro downfall was perhaps the party’s June loss of Toronto – St. Paul’s, a riding that had elected a Liberal in every election dating back to 1993,” wrote the non-profit Angus Reid Institute.[viii]

“New data … illuminates how sinking national support has affected the incumbent party’s positioning in key cities across the country. In Greater Montreal, where the party lost the recent LaSalle – Émard – Verdun byelection to the Bloc Québécois, support for the Liberals has declined by 22 points since the beginning of 2022. In the city of Winnipeg, where a loss to the NDP was expected in the historically NDP riding of Elmwood – Transcona, Liberal support has dropped 17 points.”

CSSA members and the rest of the 2.2 million licensed firearms owners are grateful Justin Trudeau’s Liberal government is so incompetent.

We’re also grateful other Canadians are finally realizing that it takes more than wavy hair and pretty socks to run a nation.

A federal election is coming.

Pierre Poilievre’s time is at hand, and so long as we do our part in this next federal election, Trudeau will be gone and with his departure, his gun ban nonsense will go with him.

The federal election can’t come quick enough for licensed Canadian firearms owners and their families.
