Special Report: Gary Anandasangaree Appointed Minister of Public Safety

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: May 13, 2025

The Canadian Shooting Sports Association wishes to inform our members and the wider firearms community of a significant change at the federal level. Gary Anandasangaree has been appointed as Canada’s new Minister of Public Safety — an office that, under the current government, has overseen the largest gun confiscation efforts in Canadian history.

Who is Gary Anandasangaree?

Mr. Anandasangaree, Member of Parliament for Scarborough—Rouge Park, has built his political reputation as a strong supporter of the Liberal government’s gun control agenda. He has consistently endorsed Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s measures, including the 2020 Order in Council banning over 1,500 models of legally owned firearms and Bill C-21, which seeks to further restrict lawful gun ownership.

In multiple public statements and House of Commons votes, Mr. Anandasangaree has stood behind “stronger gun control” as the solution to public safety. He has argued that limiting the rights of hunters, sport shooters, and collectors is necessary to address crime — despite mounting evidence that these measures have little impact on criminal activity, and instead target law-abiding Canadians.

Why This Matters Now

The appointment of Mr. Anandasangaree as Minister of Public Safety signals a continued commitment to confiscation and restrictions on Canada’s responsible gun owners. But it also represents a crucial opportunity for our community to make our voices heard.

Now, more than ever, it is vital that Mr. Anandasangaree hears directly from the people affected by these policies. We must urge him to redirect efforts toward tackling violent criminals and illegal firearms trafficking, rather than punishing hunters, sport shooters, and collectors — Canadians who have always respected the law.

The Canadian Shooting Sports Association calls on all our members, and anyone who values fair and evidence-based policy, to contact Minister Anandasangaree. Tell him you want public safety policies that actually target criminals and respect the rights of responsible firearms owners.
